There have been recent news reports of canopy failures relating to the general commercial and retail industry. Major structural failures from such elevated structures can cause numerous types of damage, and the likelihood of failure increases with equipment age and during abnormal weather conditions. Based on this information, BP recommends that fuel island canopies including structural steel, canopy columns and downspouts, canopy decking, outriggers, fascia, bullnose, gutters and electrical components be inspected for structural integrity on a regular basis. Also, BP recommends that main identification devices (MIDs) and high rise signs be inspected for structural integrity on a regular basis.
